Sixth Grade Band is where students begin the process of learning to play their chosen instrument and all that comes with it! Working sections of like instruments for the first half of the year while learning the basics of notes, sounds, tone and rhythms before they begin full ensemble. Students have the opportunity to play two concerts (February and May), as well as a few concerts for our 5th grade orientation at the end of the year. 6th Grade Band is a wonderful opportunity to explore something new and see if music is a good fit for you!
Seventh Grade Band is a wonderful way to expand on what was learned in 6th grade band, but meets in a full ensemble everyday. Students have the opportunity for not only our Holiday concert, Winter Concert and Spring Concert, they are able to begin performing at District Band Festival, State Band Festival and have the opportunity to do District Solo and Ensemble where they can do a solo or play in a small group. They also begin the basics of marching band in the spring and the common commands associated with this. They also have the opportunity to join our after school jazz band in. These experiences are a great way to expand on their musical knowledge and begin preparing them for more years to come.
Eighth Grade Band is our most experienced ensemble at the middle school. While expanding on all of the fundamentals of music from the grades before, they also begin to prepare for high school. Not only do they have the Holiday Concert and Winter Concert, they get their own Finale Concert in the Spring to really showcase their abilities. The 8th grade students also have the chance to do a “tour” for all of our Elementary Buildings, as well as march in the Allegan Fair Parade and the Memorial Day Parade. Other opportunities include District Band Festival, State Band Festival and District Solo and Ensemble, as well as join our after school jazz band. Again, these are all wonderful opportunities that we offer here at Otsego Middle School!
